Family maths: Family members can apply for accompanying residence with additional means shown; no single published uplift. (This checker applies no single published uplift — the verdict below uses the base threshold.)
Requirements at a glance
- Non-EU citizen employed by — or self-employed through a business registered in — an OECD member country (this is the distinctive gate)
- 6+ months of prior employment/self-employment at the income threshold, with foreign tax-authority or employer certification
- Income ≥ ~€3,400/month (verify the current 2.5× figure)
- Health insurance with at least €42,600 coverage, accommodation in Latvia
How to apply
- Confirm your employer or business is registered in an OECD country.
- Collect the foreign tax-authority/employer documents — these take the longest.
- File the D-visa application via the Latvian consulate (VFS Global where used), €90 fee.
- Decision typically within ~15 days; renew once for a second year if still qualifying.
Money: savings alternative & taxes
Savings route. Six months of employment/self-employment history at the threshold is the test, evidenced via foreign tax-authority or employer documents.
Tax. 183+ days (or a declared Latvian residence) makes you tax-resident under progressive rates (25.5%/33%). A 15% flat rate for nomad-visa holders has been proposed but not enacted — don't plan around it yet.
Processing time. Normally about 15 days after submission; up to 60 if the consulate asks for more.
Worth knowing: The OECD-employer requirement is unique in Europe: a remote job with, say, a UAE- or Serbia-registered company disqualifies you even on triple the income.

What income does Latvia's digital nomad visa require?
2.5× the Latvian average gross salary. Because sources anchor to different reference years, published 2026 figures range from roughly €3,400 to €4,200 per month — check the current figure with OCMA and treat the higher end as the safe planning number.
What is Latvia's OECD employer requirement?
Your employer — or your own business, if self-employed — must be registered in an OECD member country. It's Europe's only nomad visa with this gate: income from a company registered outside the OECD doesn't count, regardless of amount.
How long can I stay in Latvia on the nomad visa?
One year, renewable once — two years maximum on this route. For a longer Latvian future you'd transition to a different residence basis.
Is there a special tax rate for digital nomads in Latvia?
Not yet. A 15% flat rate for nomad-visa holders has been proposed but wasn't enacted as of mid-2026; residents currently fall under the standard progressive rates (25.5%/33% bands). Under 183 days you generally remain non-resident.
